Windows XP SP2 Download

Any sizable computer program is bound to be full of both security flaws and errors, and if that software is widely used, these faults are likely to be discovered at a fast rate both by users stumbling across glitches and by hackers searching for vulnerabilities. Before the release of Windows Vista, Windows XP was the definitive example of such a piece of software, and was inevitably the prime target for hackers.

Luckily, Microsoft is very proactive about fixing these errors as they are discovered. Every recent release of the Windows operating system has had Windows Updates available for them. However, there comes a time when there is such a huge number of updates available for an operating system that they release an all-in-one patch which includes all the updates since day one, together with many functional advances to the operating system.

In many ways, the Windows XP SP2 download, or Service Pack 2, is such an advancement over SP1 that it is almost regarded as being the next generation of the Microsoft Windows operating system. Many programs designed for Windows XP require SP2.

You can follow these instructions to find out which service pack you have on your Windows XP computer.

 • Open the ‘Control Panel’ from the start menu
 • If using the category view, select ‘Performance and Maintenance’
 • Select the ‘System’ icon

Under ‘System’, it should say ‘Microsoft Windows XP’, and then a couple of lines below it will tell you what service pack, if any, is installed. If anything other than ‘Service Pack 2’ is displayed, you will need to install it.

There are three ways of getting the service pack. The first one is to enable windows updates and wait for it to be scheduled in your update procedure; this could take many days or weeks to occur as you have no control over it. The second option is to look on the Microsoft website for the windows xp sp2 download. It can be directly downloaded; however it is a sizable file and is only recommended for users with a broadband connection, otherwise a download manager is strongly recommended. The third option is to order a copy of the service pack from Microsoft Support on CD.

Service Pack 1 is not a prerequisite for installing Service Pack 2. Even though Windows XP is no longer the latest Microsoft operating system, Service Pack 3 is in development and is expected to be released in the first half of 2008.
